Western Railroad Discussion > Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the StreetDate: 08/29/25 07:04 Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 Caltrain southbound local #118 is seen this past Wednesday on the approach to
Redwood City at 10:07. Right on his blocks just four minutes later is UP's LSF51 (South San Francisco to Redwood Jct.) with the UP 1495-1401 for power leading a 20 car train for the Port of Redwood City. Cement loads originating in Victorville, CA for Cemex at the port make up most of the consist. These loads are brought to SSF by the LRQ50 Mission Bay Local but are then backtracked 15 miles to Redwood Jct. by the 51 job. Date: 08/29/25 07:06 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 45 minutes later the 51 creeps out onto Chestnut Street for eight blocks of street running
(mostly in a curbed center median) en route to the port. Traffic light synchronization (no gates/lights/bells) protect the crossings at Middlefield Rd., Spring St. and Broadway. Date: 08/29/25 07:07 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 The LSF51 heads out to the port on M-W-F mornings returning to the Caltrain mainline in
early afternoon. Switching at the junction and on the Redwood Harbor Industrial Lead can be monitored on 161.460. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/29/25 07:09 by milepost20. Date: 08/29/25 07:55 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: FiveChime Always enjoy your updates and photos of Pennisula freight. Too bad the motive power rarely varies.
From one who has been here long enough to remember around 25 freights a day on the commute line back in the 1960's. Regards, Jim Evans Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/29/25 20:28 by FiveChime. Date: 08/29/25 08:22 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: ChrisCampi Cemex has been taking lots of loads lately, often thirty/thirty two cars worth.
Date: 08/29/25 08:46 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 The permanent shutdown of the Lehigh Permanente cement plant on the Vasona branch
several years ago should increase Cemex's market share in the Bay Area construction industry supply chain for years to come. Caltrain is just gonna have to put up with those annoying little freights. (grin) Great coverage thanks to your usual Precision Railfanning. The Stadlers have grown on me, I like riding them. I can sometimes hear the horns when the Mission Bay runs near Mountain View and Palo Alto, and they sounded a bit different recently - that explains the SD40-2s. Nice throwback to the classic EMDs on the Peninsula! Date: 08/29/25 12:46 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: exhaustED Great photos of he geep pair.

Date: 08/29/25 13:47 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: shipsbell I remember all the freights and cussed them out because my commute train would be a very few minutes late. I sure miss them now.
Patrick Date: 08/29/25 14:03 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 The LSF51 always runs with pairs of either GP40-2's or GP60's.
The Mission Bay uses pairs of 9900-class SD59MX's as seen approaching Lawrence with its cement loads behind the power. Date: 08/29/25 18:25 Re: Forty Friday: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: BoostedFridge milepost20 Wrote:

Nice series, and some great first/last mile freight images. Is the local bringing loads of an input material? wonder why it couldn't get into the yard. Date: 08/30/25 10:29 Re: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: phthithu timz Wrote:

I was thinking it could be the following locations based on the right hand curve in the eastbound direction: Howest Not Hayard Park (had center siding) Belmont Lawrence Just basing these off track map view I bet there are a lot of curves that I can't see with that tool. Date: 08/30/25 10:53 Re: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: milepost20 I'm guessing that's the far south end of the Brisbane Lagoon behind the commute
with US101 hidden behind the trees in the background. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/30/25 10:55 by milepost20. Date: 08/30/25 11:33 Re: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: timz Now that you mention it, there's the highway sign
peeking out from behind the guy on the right. Might be the guardrail we're seeing too. Date: 08/30/25 13:27 Re: Under the Wires, On the Street Author: phthithu Ah now I’m seeing it!
