The light was right, but it's not the same

I had to dig around to determine when the last time was that I shot a photo of a westbound train coming out of the shed at West Norden that wasn't in the winter. It was July 19, 2021, for a daylight shot, and August 4, 2021, for some nighttime Milky Way photos. In November of 2021 the searchlight signals at West Norden were taken out of service, and in early December of that year the signal bridge on the west side of the sheds was removed. (If interested, BoilingMan had a great set of photo essays of the signal changeover and subsequent removal of the signal bridge.) As a result of the signal bridge and searchlight signal removal, I just seem to have lost interest in shooting on the west side of the sheds.

Westbounds on Donner Pass are in short supply these days, and most of them seem to crest the summit in the morning hours. The light was right on the evening of Wednesday, July 30, 2025, so I made an impromptu decision to move further east from where I had planned to shoot the MROMI between Norden and Soda Springs. I'm rather glad that I did, as a cloud was casting a shadow on the west flank of Mount Judah and creating interesting lighting as UP 2651 showed up with a long train of empty autoracks. It's not the same, but it's not all bad.

Cheers,
Sean

Nice!
Is the grade crossing just a little west of your location back in?
Lite is right. This morning what looked like the loaded westbound grain train that usually goes via
Feather River Canyon, came by Alta with 7 big units and 3 cars!

The grade crossing between East Norden and West Norden at Old Donner Summit Road, east of the sheds in the photo, usually goes back in service sometime in May or June. It's typically dependant on how much the snow is lingering.

Great shot of a rare evening westbound. I agree, since the searchlight's came down, Norden doesn't feel worth the shot anymore. It is amazing how many decades it took for one of the most historical locations on the railroad to slowly get stripped away into a concrete box.
