Probably need to start spending more money on Operation Lifesaver presentations again. It certainly appears UP (and BNSF) have reduced money spent on grade crossing safety efforts in the last few years.

Wow i have never seen a guy jumping out of a moving truck while being shoved sideways by a locomotive.I would be ashamed for being so careless.

Going by the pictures in the linked article,it wasn't the truck that got hit but the trailer attached to it with with a small excavator on it.

It looks like the driver started to pull into the intersection at the last second
but it was too late.  He probably went home and popped a top on a cold one.

Whereas the City employee may soon be looking for other employment, he might find that in Hollywood.
His jump from the truck was almost Tom Cruise stunt quality.

It appears those two locomotives were travelling light.  Would the air brakes be enabled in such a situation, since there is not trailing rolling stock, or would the engineer just use the engine break at maximum to slow and stop the train?

I would say the engineer would use the emergency application.. Or also known as the bighole.. Because it shows on the download. Some whiplash Willie attorney could say in court the engineer could have stopped sooner but didn't use the emergency portion. Basically its a hail Mary attempt to stop. Its not something that we as engineers want to be involved in.

They weren't light locos. Lots of flat cars behind them...

It appears that truck hitch has a "BIG BALL" to have been yanked like that, nearly disecting the trailer while unloading the trencher.
