Western Railroad Discussion > Rambling around Topeka

A month ago I gave an image presentation for the Topeka Chapter of the NRHS. Naturally I made the one hour jog over from Manhattan with all necessary camera gear. Here’s a short visual report from my rambling:

1. UP 7008 is eastbound with a unit grainer near Ruby Yard in western Topeka, KS. That’s the US hwy 75 overpass back there.

2. & 3. UP 7061 leads coal loads through nearby Grantville, KS to meet…

4. …UP 3092 on an autorack train, probably heading down the GSR.

5. Back at Kansas Avenue in Topeka UP 6668 is eastbound with a stacker. This train is coming off the GSR. And an eagle eye can just see it curving onto the regular main line back there underneath the Topeka Blvd overpass.

6. UP 5767 is coming off the yard lead in front of the former UP passenger depot in Topeka.

Speaking of the old UP depot, here it is as the “Great Overland Station”. I will be presenting my image show inside this building later on that night.

Very nice shots. In the first image, UP 7008 is one of the ex-GECX units (ex GECX 4008) that ran around in UP colors and GECX lettering for a few years in the late 1990s after delivery

Nice group of photos, Lance.  I was really impressed with the size and architecture of the UP Topeka depot in my only visit there in 2007.

Grew up in Topeka... used to volunteer for clean-ups of the Overland Station with Topeka RR Days back in it's heydey. Lots of nostalgia for me in these pics. Keep em comin'!
