Western Railroad Discussion > Nichols Junction, Springfield, Mo.Date: 12/04/25 07:51 Nichols Junction, Springfield, Mo. Author: hank IOn August 15, 2021 a northbound BNSF empty coal train at Nichols Junction in Springfield, Missouri. Nichols Junction is about 3 miles west of the BNSF (former Frisco) yard in Springfield, Missouri. This is where the Ft. Scott sub heads north toward Kansas City and the Cherokee sub heads toward Tulsa, Oklahama. Train features a 5 unit mix of GE and EMD power pulling 135 empty coal hoppers followed by 3 more units working as Distributed Power. Most likely 2 units were on line at the head end and just one unit of the DPU was on line.
