Happier Days at the Weed RFP Mill
Author: spider1319

All from April 2021 with CORP switching the mill after returning from Hornbrook. I might add to the original post,  this job with the trips to trade trains at Hornbrook went from five days per week to three and then two and finally intermitten. Never a good sign. Some days days were "perfect" like we used say about our helper and hostling jobs.Sudden shutdowwns with sixty days pay seems more prevalent these days rather than at the end of sixty days required by the WARN Act Bill Webb

Very nice, going to be interesting to see what lumber industry is left in California after the 4
Western Canadian provinces become part of the US. That line to Alaska is going to be a game
changer.

Good stuff.
The big green building is the most recent to have burned. Not counting the old Saloon in downtown a few months ago.

We used to drive into the mill and look at the green building and wonder why and how it was still standing.
Was amazed though that the truck shop burned first.

The lumber industry in BC is hurting too. DOMTAR just announced they're closing the Pulp Mill in Crofton, BC on Vancouver Island. The paper plant at this location had closed about a year ago

Agree, seeing some strange finger pointing going on about the general Forest Industries. Still seeing Canadian Lumber as wrapped loads and blocks of large CN boxcars passing through Dunsmuir. Here's a Canadian board post with news links from a few days ago:

Quite a few videos on YT but nothing from the Candian big media:

You Tube posting about an Alberta contingent in DC currently to discuss statehood and with Toronto's recent
announcement on new carbon fees something is going to change,

I have a place in Castella West of Dunsmuir Ca. Lately much finished lumber , West bound with wrappers from Canada down to Oregon. Plus Utility poles to rebuild the southern California fire area.

Didn't that idea die on the vine?

fwiw the little switch in the lower left corner of photo #3 is a left over from the original Long-Bell route towards Grass Lake and the surrounding area. The present trackage has a bit of a angle to the south where as the older Mill and log pond were to the north-east of what is there today. The old log pond is where the large log deck is now, the concrete from the old slash burner and some of the older concrete foundations can be seen on Google overhead photos.

There was also a route off the present tail track that is along the south edge of the property that was apparently an access into the woods closer to Black Butte but higher up the slope of Mt Shasta. Don't have a date but that area would have conflicted with the present location of the mainline to Klamath Falls. I believe all that's left of that access route is an isolated dirt road crossing and a Forest Service road number.

Real nice bunch. Unfortunately, the only constant is change.
