Who could have possibly predicted a potential fire issue.... with several thousand tonnes of combustible material piled up.... out in the desert?!

Watched that thing burn! Could feel the heat a distance away.

They are making new tie piles now.

Creosoted RR tie disposal
Author: DWDebs/2472

I'm the hazmat manager at Niles Canyon Railway in Sunol, CA. Before crude oil prices dropped in late 2014, there was a market of worn-out (i.e. rotten) old creosoted railroad ties... they were shredded (I think) and burned as fuel in some power plants. Several years ago, I inquired if this was still an economical disposal option. I was told that the nearest power plant that accepted old RR ties was in Texas, and that trucking would cost far more than than disposal at a local landfill that accepts Treated Wood Waste. I was also told that "be glad you're not the Union Pacific RR, they have 600,000+ old RR ties in Nevada to dispose of."

Gee, a fire started in that huge, expensive to dump pile of unwanted, HAZ-MAT ties?  Really?  Way out there?  How could such a thing happen, or be predicted?

Yeah, that's like disposing old tires by making a huge pile somewhere. An arsonist would get off on that..

Nice video! Did they determine the source of ignition for the fire?

Let me see if I understand...  Used ties are collected and stored becoming something of a logistical nightmare about how to dispose of them.  Various plans are considered and rejected as too costly or too complicated.  Then, without warning and for no apparent reason, the entire pile somehow catches fire and burns completely?  Is that it?  Hmmm...imagine that....

Yes and in a spot where the fire wouldn't really bother anyone though a bit of smoke could
drift over 50 but so what.
