West and East of Ottumwa
Author: Agent

The other day, I was thinking that it had been quite a while since I leapfrogged Amtrak #6 as it stopped in Ottumwa, Iowa.  And then on Thursday, I saw a report that there was a new Charger deadheading on #6(25).  It ended up running not too late and I was able to fit in catching it both before and after its station stop yesterday.

1) As I was setting up at the overpass just west of Chillicothe, a BNSF hi-rail truck appeared around the bend.  I had just enough time to get a grab shot of BNSF 34970 as it rolled eastward.

2-3) Not long after, the eastbound California Zephyr came through running on the westbound track.

4) I made to a crossing west of Batavia before #6 showed up now running on Main 2.

5-6) Brand new ALC-42 AMTK 379 on its way east for acceptance.

7) Five minutes later, a westbound BNSF mixed freight came through.  This was likely a Galesburg, Illinois to Lincoln, Nebraska train (GALLIN).  I'd later hear a detector give it a report for 622 axles.

8) ET44C4 BNSF 3811 leading.

9) ES44C4 BNSF 7189 trailing.

I'll add some freight car photos.

10) There was this string of well cars with the first one being a Florida East Coast single-well marked as being on its way to its home shop for repair.

11) FEC 72250.

12) Gondola PRSX (ex-CNW) 350443.

13) I can just barely see the remains of a Chicago & North Western logo near the end of the car.

14) A former Conrail coil car that now has a NYC reporting mark.

15) NYC 623640.

On the end of the train was an unusual sight.  The DPU was technically a mid-train DPU, but with only car following it.

16) ES44AC BNSF 5939 with a well car trailing.

17) BNSF 270509 is also marked as being sent to its home shop for repair.

18) One last shot of the train.
