BNSF Local with GP60Ms in Anaheim Late Last Night
Author: CrossTieWalker

Passing through the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (quite the word salad in order to get to the acronym "ARTIC"!) ... the station some call the "Disco Armadillo" ... is BNSF Railway "Scheduled Road Switcher" (local) behind a pair of GP60Ms, heading back to La Mirada CA at 22:30 (10:30 pm).

Wow five cars and one engine NOT  tagged. At least on this  side of the video The caboose looks horrible. Why won't the RR's create a secure  place to tie up their equipment?

I've been told that spray-painted tagging on equipment is not worth employees' lives, and they are not to intervene if they seen this occurring.  (Of course, not all taggers are armed, but one never knows.)  It is, after all, just paint.

Similarly, I talked to someone at Home Depot once who told me they are instructed not to stop shoplifters, as it it costs less to replace them then pay for all the employee funerals ... and lawsuits.  And back publicity.

I'm not a fan of tagging either, but I'm a bigger fan of people remaining unharmed.

Nice video and I enjpyed watching the signal aspect change from green to red, diverging clear. Does anyone ride in the cabose between switching sites or do they just use it as a shoving platform.

It's a shoving platform.

Why a caboose?

It provides a platform on the non-powered end of the train on which a crew member can stand while backing down long stretches (such as, in this case, Metrolink's Olive Sub).

I believe they were picked up at SA Recycling, a scrap yard in Anaheim, along the Santa Ana River and the city's border with the city of Orange.

These locals head east out of La Mirada (in Los Angeles County) and the BNSF San Bernardino Sub, through Fullerton to Placentia (Atwood).

From there, the trains back down Metrolink's Olive Sub to SA Recycling (and thus the need for a caboose/shoving platform).  Once done there, they continue backing down the Olive Sub to the junction with Metrolink's Orange Sub (at CP Olive ... getting hungry yet?) in the city of Orange.  Then the train reverses again, with the locomotives once again on the head end, and takes the Orange Sub west through Anaheim back to Fullerton, and after transitioning once again onto the San Bernardino Sub at Fullerton Junction/Fullerton train station, they continue west back to La Mirada.

Obviously, they hit a few other industries along this Y-shaped route, too.

I hope this helped.  If you have other questions, let us (the collective brain trust here on TO) know.

I worked that job once, back in 2021. Did the big shove up the Olive Sub as mentioned in the thread. Shoving platform is a must. Still have my Metrolink switch key should I ever choose to work out of LA again. I still have a house down there (rental now) near the Olive Sub and Meats.

Nice video Craig. Some wicked flat spots on a few of those gons. LOL

A westbound local was ahead of this one, passed by Fullerton railcam at 22:21, only 1 tank car (from Coca Cola or Stepan Chemical in Anaheim) and BNSF 189-149.

Where did the two TBOX come from?  Must be transporting salvaged locomotive parts from engines scrapped at SA Recycling?

I'm not sure, but here is a screenshot of this train from BNSF's computer earlier in the evening, before it got off the BNSF and onto Metrolink.  (Once off BNSF, their computer system can no longer see it until it jumps back onto the railroad in Fullerton, of course.  And I received this while it was still on Metrolink, so perhaps these cars in your question were picked up elsewhere, or intended for an industry between Anaheim and Fullerton.  Or not.)

And it is interesting that the train is shown on the computer as having no caboose!  Perhaps they just don't show "shoving platforms" in the computer...  And it also doesn't show two locomotives, either.

Wow--almost every car had a flat wheel.  It didn't use to be that way--flat wheels were alot more rare when I was younger.  Why the difference now??

Thanks for sharing. A lot different when I worked the job. No Irvines and different on duty time. Bill Webb

As a retired leo I do not agree that the best plan is to ignore the destruction of another's property in fear of retaliation. Call the law. Be a good witness.  It wouldn't take but a few examples of enforcement for the word to get around not to mess with the railroads. Regarding firearms, I always carried two guns all the while I was in public and knew how to use them.  The perps had better be darn good with theirs if they dared to draw on me.  At least two generations of parents have been complete failures raising their offspring. It is not the responsibility of law abiding citizens to look the other way.  This is why most of our major cities are cesspools where honest citizens can't safely go out at night.
