Western Railroad Discussion > Rockin' along...Date: 05/05/26 14:55 Rockin' along... Author: roustabout I was anticipating a north manifest with WP heritage unit on the point. A south grain had pulled in Shedd siding (on the UP Brooklyn Sub) and 14 had already blasted by. The dragger 9 miles south of me sounded off with its entry message so I wandered out to see, with hopes. No heritage but a rather fast Herzog ballast train with lots of new-ish looking cars - must be empty headed to eastern Oregon to reload.

Why the UP forces on the rail, but Herzog on the ballast?

Why the UP > forces on the rail, but Herzog on the ballast? These are specialized ballast cars for "high-speed" dumping. You'll see them used on any Class 1 railroad. Before the train arrives, a GPS survey will be made via a hirail trip. The train will then dump ballast where and when the program tells it to. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/05/26 21:22 by MP555. Author: 8notch thanks Mapboy, I do remember seeing a quarry just off of Highway 30 near Haines Oregon but never knew that UP and Herzog used it for ballast.
