Was Trackside at Rocklin Ca this afternoon when I heard DS 57 talk to an Amtrak Special at Siemens along the UP Fresno Sub.

Turns out this was an E/B Airo Set heading over Donner (Roseville Sub) for the NEC. Sun angle wasn't right for Rocklin so I headed up the hill and ran into rain at Colfax so I tried again at Dutch Flat where the rain had tapered off. Nice to see something different than the normal Amtrak 5/6.

You were standing close to where the SP Dutch Flat Station was until a cab forward blew up there and distroyed it many years ago.
Do I have that right?

I saw the Amfleet & Viewliner sleeper go by on #5 and figured something was up…
I saw this guy heading East at Roseville yesterday (he met 5 at RSV).

Yes, that’s about where the cab forward blew up. No one was hurt, the locomotive was tied down and unattended at the time. Eventually the water got too low and the resulting explosion took out the depot & hotel.
A stand-alone depot was not rebuilt. The hotel WAS rebuilt and the depot was incorporated into the new building.
