Western Railroad Discussion > TX: Toyota to expand Tacoma production in San Antonio

Toyota plans to move its Tacoma truck production from its Baja California MX location to its existing San Antonio TX facility over the next several years. Other Mexican production will not be changed. Toyota had previously sent some Tundra production to Guanajunto. That will continue.

The increase will result in a near doubling of total units shipped out of San Antonio from about 200,000 to about 350,000 units. Toyota employs about 48,000 Americans per CNBC.   Which railroads currently haul vehicles out of Toyota- San Antonio, and does Tesla ship vehicles by rail from its nearby plant?  Doubling the output seems like it will be good for rail workers, too

The San Antonio Plant is located on UPRR Corpus Christi Subdivision. Both UPRR and BNSF serve plant. Not sure on percentage each carrier has. UPRR also operates an intermodal ramp that gets parts for Toyota. 

The Tesla plant is in Austin.  Tesla ships some vehicles by rail. They are trucked to a facility located near Hutto on the UP Austin Subdivision. I believe this is a UP only operation. 

Storm clouds brew for the port of San Diego and the BNSF crews who operate the nightly auto trains that originate there. The Tacomas de Baja is a significant portion of the auto import business at the port.
