This wasn't one of the SP-painted-and-lettered units.  It started out as demonstrator MKCX 9901 in blue and gold:

The locomotive known as Southern Pacific 503 was originally built as an MK5000C diesel-electric by Morrison-Knudsen in August 1994.  It was one of six demonstrator units tested on the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads before being sold to the Utah Railway in November 2000.

According to Don Strack's site, The Diesel Shop, and the June 24 post on here announcing the acquisition, UTAH 5004 started life as MKCX 9901, and MKCX 9901 was never repainted or lettered for Southern Pacific.  The unit that started life as SP 503 became UTAH 5003, which is not the unit in your photo.
