UP derailment on Moor Hill, Nevada
Author: JDLX

I was coming back from the field this evening and saw that sometime in the last couple days UP derailed roughly 18 cars on Moor Hill, just east of Wells, Nevada. Not sure when this happened but long enough ago that the excavators and portable lighting were mostly staged for departure and the cars were in a pile next to the tracks. Appears this one happened in the exact same spot as another derailment back in 2019.

In the several books I have on the history & operations of The Overland route, including John Signor's 2007 effort, mention is made of the deceptive nature of Moor Hill.

I guess the correct name is Wells Hill, but everyone calls it Moor Hill

Was the MNPRV 1, and happened the afternoon of Thursday the 2nd. Got a few hours of heldaway in Elko thanks to that kerfuffle.
