Hey everyone, 

Seeking any info as to the whereabouts of the remaining 4(?) F59's with Metrolink and with their status.
Last I heard they were reactivated periodically to fill in when the F125's were needing repairs.
I'm planning yet another trip over in September/October from Australia and was hoping to catch them.

Also, Is there any sort of source to find out what equipment is being used on each service? I've seen similar programs here in Australia, just curious if there's anything similar in the US.

The best way to figure out is by word of mouth. I would recommend joining a few Southern California/IE/LA area rail groups and asking around. Theres usually a few railfans or Metrolink employees who are always willing to share information. 

I do believe that the F59PHRs are still in service, Metrolink has been experiencing a big equipment shortage for a while now so unless they magically fix all the problems with the F125s and magically get a couple dozen refurbrished commuter cars then there is high hope to see a F59PHR by October. 

I do wish you luck! Hope you catch their F59PHRs, while they no longer have the cool paint schemes on it they are really cool looking

Yes, I see at least 2 of them from time to time.  Usually when passing a train on the 91/Perris Valley line on my way to work in the morning, laying over in the storage track in Riverside on weekends, and I also got to ride behind 852 on a weekday evening trip from Pomona to Redlands this past April (seen below at Pomona).  I believe I saw one about a week ago in Riverside.

Last time I was in Downtown LA the retired fleet was stored at Metrolink Keller Yard.

I saw one on an Antelope Valley train last week.
Nice break from the usual stuff.

all of the F125's are getting their engines rebuilt.

I kind of keep track of the Metrolink fleet, locomotives and cars.  I last seen the following in service:

852 - 06/16/2026

856 - 05/24/2025 (she hasn't been seen by me in over a year now

861 - 08/01/2026, she was laying over with a MP36 on a trainset at South Perris.

868 - 04/14/2026, she been hiding form me for a few months now

These are the only F59PHs still owned by Metrolink

800 - F540PH was at Keller Yard as of 05/20/2026

Meanwhile, CALTRAIN sold all their F40's to Peru, when those engines, paid for by California taxpayers, could have been used elsewhere in the state (Capitol Corridor, METROLINK, etc.).

Sadly those are not California Compliant. I am thankful that they at least kept three that are currently being used by Amtrak California on the CapCor. You never know maybe they could end up down in the LA area on Surfliner...
