Western Railroad Discussion > Some colorful South Central Colorado shots

Took a drive down to the Alamosa Colorado this morning which turned into an all day affair. My goal was to shoot the C&TS DL535E 114 in it's "new" RW&B Scheme not only representing our nations 250th Anniversary but also the 150th Anniversary of the state of Colorado.  Well, found it what seems to be it's usual spot here in Antonito.  Taken 8-5-2026

The 1st 2 shots are/were a surprise. At the Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Shops in town after doing a quick pass by seeing what was around, noticed this one in the shop.  Figured, what the hell, I'll  go ask if I might be able to grab a few shots while they were inside wouldn't hurt.  The CMO could not have been more accommodating. After making some small talk about RR'ing and both our background in the industry, (Seems he knew the person at Rock & Rail that I worked with/for. His opinion is one of many, which all tend the same way, I'll leave it at that")  After all the small talk I went about and started taking shots. After grabbing a few , I noticed a CXRG Maint Truck kinda sorta sittin in a rather "bad" spot for any decent shots, I took a chance and asked if they might be able to move said truck to open up some more possibilities for shots. Not only did they do that they made me feel welcome.  These 2 are inside the shop,  Shot 1 was taken before they moved this one outside, all in order to move said Maint truck outside, apparently it was in their way. 2nd shot shows the GP30 191 uncoupled from 2023 but still in shop.

Both these units are headed to the ex MOP/DRGW/SP/UP Towner Line, now operated by the Colorado Pacific. Both are going to WESKAN Facilities located out that way, with the 191 supposedly going to one in Scott City Ks.  If all goes as planned both if not just the 191 will be on the move this Friday(That is the plan as it sits for now.  The 2023 needs some TLC as it was blowing oil out the exhaust.

WESKAN 2023 is ex GN 3031; BN 2514; BNSF 2903:  F/N 7787-6  B/N 30119;      WESKAN 191 is ex CBQ 949; BN 2226; BNSF 2753, 2743:   F/N 7621-10  B/N 27160  Both were in UP Pueblo Yard on Dec 9 2025 on their way here.

Here in shot 4 is the WESKAN 2023 after being moved outside the shops.  Sun was a tough one.

Shot 5   CXR SD70MAC 707 getting some TLC in the shop as well.  If any one why the numbering scheme was all over the place, it the road numbers represent the AREA Codes where Mr Soloviev owns/operates at.  Ya learn something knew everyday.

great shots, first I seen this RR. What are the large boxes on top of the114?  Looks like air intakes.

Air Filters of some sort or as you said Air Intakes. Ben

Winter intake/exhaust covers. They're removable, purpose is so snow doesn't block the vents in the Yukon's winters

Thanks for the clarification SHS. That was actually another thought on what they were for. Ben

Nice to see that GP30 carbody off to another life, even after retirement from BNSF
