Espeeboy's question from 3 posts down got me wondering. Why is it called the "J-yard"? It isn't in the shape of a J, & since I'm on the subject, what is the history of this little yard? How old is it, what were some of the origonal industries? thanks for any info. Robby F. (Mr. MRL) Date: 01/23/04 00:40 Butte St. yard Author: coachyard It was formerly called Butte St. Yard, the major (though far from only) freight interchange between Pacific Electric and parent Southern Pacific. PE's side was electrified and most of it got excavated for the Alameda Corridor ramp to the trench. SP also had a (skinny) K Yard at Firestone Park that lasted till the corridor project.

C Yard was the departure yard. IIRC, was at least 4, maybe 5 tracks, not very long. Not a yard, but the area just beyond Dayton, under the I-5 Fwy. was known as the "Pigeon Farm", for all the birds / droppings. While making moves to avoid the ML, you could ask the Dayton Operator to "line us toward the Pigeon Farm".
