Western Railroad Discussion > Monterey SP Depot Developments?Date: 03/09/04 20:09 Monterey SP Depot Developments? Author: shed47 Recent visit to Monterey gave the opportunity to grab some shots of both the passenger and freight depots. Has there been any progress on long standing plans for rebuilding/redevelopment of the depot? Freight depot has notices attached to the building indicating application has been made to the California Coastal Commission for permit to demolish structure. Is a resolution to these soap operas anywhere in sight?

Author: shed47 Date: 03/09/04 20:38 Re: Monterey SP Depot Developments? Author: toulyardgoat Unfortunatly the freight depot was voted by the Monterey City Council to be demolished. The passenger depot will remain, with the possibility of it becoming a museum of some sorts. But the city has budget woes(like most cities in Calif.) and nothing will be done in the near future.
This "soap opera" will go on a few more seasons. Date: 03/09/04 22:45 Re: Monterey SP Depot Developments? Author: sploopconductor Yes, they really need more parking! We have the same mentality on the Bakersfield city council ... they like to reduce city parks to the ground, cut down the nice trees, then let the area sit idle, dirty, dusty for who knows how long! All for the public's good??
What's behind all this; BIG, BIG money? Larry Date: 03/10/04 06:44 Re: Monterey SP Depot Developments? Author: tburzio Hi!

Of course, I see why fixing up an unused train station would take precedence over basic police and fire protection. They certainly don't need any schools, because no one is learning much anyway. This is all part of Window of the Bay park, which will stretch from Fisherman's wharf to near the Naval Post-graduate School. So people can look at the bay while driving and then rear-end my cab at the next traffic light.
