Western Railroad Discussion > A Morning Run to MagnaDate: 09/10/04 07:40 A Morning Run to Magna Author: GrandeGold The Utah Railway Company runs a local from Midvale to Magna, Utah (on the former D&RGW Bingham and Garfield Branches) and return on Monday-Thursday, and Saturday evenings. The local, symbol RUT310 is scheduled as an evening job so as not to interfere with UP's "Midvale Tramp" daytime operations on the branches.
Quite by accident, I was fortunate to catch a very rare morning run from Midvale to Magna and return on Saturday, August 14th. In this photo, the RUT310 local with GP38 #2004 in the lead crosses 78th Street with four cars for Magna. The track runs parallel to the Jordan River Parkway trail through this area... Date: 09/10/04 07:44 The Dry Wheat Fields of Kearns Author: GrandeGold The D&RGW Garfield Branch once wandered along miles of dry wheat fields in the southwest part of the Salt Lake Valley. Most of that land has been developed into homes today, with the exception of a mile or so of pristine land. Here the UR 2004 treads north between huge housing developments between Welby Junction and the city of Kearns. This location is also just west of Salt Lake Airport #2...
Date: 09/10/04 07:47 Downtown Magna City Author: GrandeGold The Garfield Branch does not head through the city of Magna, but on the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains west of town. Here the UR 6062 prepares to depart for Midvale after interchanging three cars with Kennocott Corporation. The location is 2700 South Street at 9000 West in the heart of historic Magna City...
Date: 09/10/04 07:51 Back on the Move at Riter Author: GrandeGold The UR 6062 West (UP timetable direction) heads southeast just west of Magna at the location of the abandoned Riter siding. The large "C" on the hill at left pays tribute to Magna's Cyprus High School. The little two car train should move along just fine with the provided locomotion...
Date: 09/10/04 07:55 Pickup at Welby Junction Author: GrandeGold Back on the move, the RUT310 had stopped to pick up three empty covered hoppers at a PVC pipe manufacturer at Welby. The track at left, the Bingham Branch, once ran 10 miles up to Kennocott operations at Bingham Canyon. UP's "Midvale Tramp" continues to run 2.5 miles up this track to the Interstate Brick Company at Bagley...
Date: 09/10/04 07:59 West Jordan Sugar Factory Author: GrandeGold The West Jordan Sugar Factory has been closed since the early 1970's, but a few of the original structures survive. The building at right is now home to the "Sugar Factory Playhouse." Note also that the large grain storage solos and the conveyor double as cellular phone towers...
Date: 09/10/04 08:02 Back at Midvale Wye Author: GrandeGold With the 38 mile journey to Magna and return complete, UR 6062 East is temporarily parked on the east leg of the wye at Midvale. The crew has gone to "beans" and will return to forward the train to Provo, some 35 miles down the mainline. The power will return in the late afternoon to Midvale with over 80 cars to supply Utah Railway's numerous Salt Lake Valley locals.

I always scour this chat for your postings. Makes me want to move right out there for all the great railfannin' in geographically diverse Utah. Although I don't want to contribute to the urban clutter and ruin your pictures with my 'little box'. What I like most about your photo essays is that middle-of-nowhere feeling you convey. I look at your pictures and I can almost smell the sage and experience the palpable silence of the beautiful Utah desert. Thanks, Bud...
