Rio Grande GP40's on Roydale (CO) Job
Author: cozephyr

Union Pacific's Roydale Local is using two Rio Grande GP40's, 3111 and 3129. They were pulling up hill out of UP's 36th Street Yard, Denver, CO, Jan. 7, 2004. This will likely end come 2007 when UP moves to a new subcontractor built and owned yard built at Watkins, CO. UP will lease the yard. Denver RTD FasTracks line to Denver International Airport (DIA) could be running this alignment. 36th Street Yard will close as a UP operation being replaced by RTD commuter diesel shop and yard.

That left-side number board looks like the conductor made it on his inkjet... ;-)

Nice shot--still has its full light package, too, but the jerry-rigged # board has to go.

Didn't the Rock Island run out that way too?

Rio Grande 3111 Headed for Shop

Noted Jan. 12, 2005 that D&RGW 3111 is dead and drained. It was emitting heavy black smoke and had turbo bark. It needs mechanical attention.
