Just like the siderods on a steam engine, the chain drive distributes power from the main driven axle to another axle, so that wheel slippage is reduced. The Galloping Geese were built on automobile or light truck frames, (Pierce Arrow, I think) with the driveshaft driving one axle carrying the differential. Early Mack trucks had a similar drive system to connect the differential to the wheels, I believe this was to give greater ground clearance.
