The Big Trees Today
Author: samreeves

I went to do some photos of the Santa Cruz Big Trees & Pacific today. The SCBTP continues to have a lot of character. The CF7's are still going strong, wooden combines help make up the consist, and wag-wags still gaurd crossings on Chestnut Street. Here's the morning inbound train heading towards Casino at the corner of Walnut and Chestnut.

The Big Trees discharged its passengers, headed up to the wye to clear for the Santa Cruz Local, and then had about an hour layover at Casino. About 12:30 the skies cleared of the fog, and the outbound train is headed up the hill. This location is at the Lincoln Street wig-wag.

I fought the choking traffic up Highway 9, pulled into the Henry Cowell SP lot and walked like a madman into the redwoods. Perched up on the roots of the redwoods, here is CF7 2641 leading its train over the San Lorenzo River near Big Trees. I'll definitely have to go back on a foggy day when its a lot less contrasty. However it's a fun railroad to follow along. Nobody is going to call you in for taking photos here!!

Nice pictures and thanks for the reminder... I need to get out there soon. Still have yet to catch that Seabright wigwag in action.

Does 2600 run? The one time I visited the SCBT&P in 1996, 2641 was the power as well, and I don't recall ever seeing pictures of 2600 in service on the line.

It does, but they usually don't have a need to run two engines at once. 2641 gets the lion's share of work.

2600 runs and ran a freight run to Santa Cruz this afternoon. Two trains will be run on occasion, but not often; particularly when large events are going on up at Mt. Hermon.
