I think the "E" was referring to direction.

I think what TexBob meant was that SD75M 242 would have been ATSF 242, not BNSF 242. Apart from ATSF 666, the 200-series SD75M's were the only red and silver warbonnets that got new numbers under BNSF. ATSF 242 became BNSF 8242 in May 1998.
