I hate to sound like one of those "lock the door behind me" types but I feel Durango is quite big enough, thank you. I feel that Durango has had a lot of change in the 25 plus years I have lived here, and not all to the good either. It bothers me that the economics are such that it is impossible for middle class types (eg, school teachers, etc) are totally unable to afford to purchase any basic housing let alone people on minimum wage or Social Security. I think there is something basically wrong with a town that consists of rich people and waiters/waiteress' sucking up to rich people until their next move to Hawaii. I could rant for pages, but it doesn't have anything to do with trains so I will shut up. Then again, it was the best color weekend in recent memory up towards Silverton, so what the heck. And sadly I think a lot of people are being priced out of decent housing all over the country, and you don't even get to see #481 charging up the hill right outside my back door (literally...can't talk on the phone when the train is going by). So, what the heck. Time to go back to work and stop the rant

Sorry if touched a raw nerve. The article is one of a series of articles published every Friday geared towards people interested in weekend travel to interesting locations. The articles have discussed places as diverse as Pittsburgh, Duluth and Brooklyn. As such, the Durango article is not much different than the countless number of articles appearing in the rail press as well as the many posts on this internet site extolling the wonders of Durango and the D & SNG. As you noted, there are many other communities in the nation experiencing the same economic issues you've described. I have no idea what to do about it. Lastly, Colorado is so beautiful, it sort of sells itself. I've taken several trips there in the past few years, both for professional and personal reasons and fell in love with the state. But I'm more of a big city person, so if I ever move to CO, I'd most likely settle in Denver. Dave of Pittsburgh (visited Durango in 2002 and had a great time.) Naw, just Monday morning. Durango is like any other place...sometimes it drives you nuts. But while I have made my share of mistakes, living in Durango ain't one of them. If you want an idea of how real estate goes in this part of the world, look at www.durangoherald.com. From what I have read, Pittsburgh has one of the best wages/housing cost ratios in the country. On a happier note, gorgous colors this year. This morning is alternating heavy rain & brilliant sunshine. I went up to Silverton twice this weekend ( a family color trip & a mountain climb) and already the snow is building up on the higher peaks like Pigeon. Hopefully we will have another good snow year. While Durango has its share of economic problems (which as an attorney who specializes in bankruptcy I see literally every day) a lack of outdoor fun ain't one of them. Hope you can come out again soon! Hank of Durango PS. Two bumper stickers come to mind: "If its tourist season does that mean I can shoot them" and "You're on vacation, I'm not". We love the money, but that doesn't mean that we Durangotangs don't get cranky!!!! Date: 10/04/05 14:23 Re: NY Times Article on Durango/A offtopic rant Author: nycman Dave, are you a skier? I guess if you were you would already
live in Denver. Let's see, Keystone, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Steamboat Springs. Great skiing. Your vestibule companion from the 700/4449 trip, nycman. Date: 10/04/05 15:10 Re: NY Times Article on Durango/A offtopic rant Author: HuskerHank Nice crispy snow but badly overcrowded. Better selection is Durango Mtn Resort (fka Purgatory...lots of medium level and just 25 miles up the road), Wolf Creek (small, no crowds, WONDERFUL snow), Telluride (if you can get past all of the rich purty people, some very serious skiing) and Taos (Yipes!!!). Or, if you are really into YIPES!!! the new Silverton Mountain Area...avalanche beacons essential. Or, if you don't mind some grunt work the backcountry skiing in the San Juans is beyond belief (assuming it doesn't bury you).
Rainy day in Durango but warm. Still, maybe some build up this evening as about a foot of snow is forecast for Wyoming and northern Colorado. Hank Praying for a REAL San Juan winter! Date: 10/05/05 16:26 Re: NY Times Article on Durango/A offtopic rant Author: RuleG Hey nycman:
Great to hear from you. No, I'm not much of a skiier although I'd like to do some cross-country skiing some time. Skiing or no skiing, I would definitely like to ride the Ski Train. Hank: I was in Colorado at this time last year. I flew into Denver, drove to San Luis and then into northern New Mexico to ride the Cumbres & Toltec. On the day of the trip, it snowed and the next day I drove over Cumbres Pass (the road was not plowed much), visited Dunes National Park, stopped over in Salida, drove along the Arkansas River to Canon City and back to Denver (all in one day!). The fall colors were wonderful! Also saw an unpatched Rio Grande locomotive. Can't wait to return. Dave Date: 10/05/05 20:01 Re: NY Times Article on Durango/A offtopic rant Author: HuskerHank Welcome to Colorful Colorado! With all due respect to Back Home, there is a reason why I have lived here in Colorado for the past 30 years and not in Nebraska, no matter how good the team was (god, I hate to use the past tense!!!)
