Farewell to FL9 Excursion
Author: bn2189

There were at least a couple hundred of us taking this shot, and nobody has posted it yet? I guess I'll end that omission.

FL9 #2027, leading the Metro-North Farewell to the FL9's special excursion over the Housatonic Railroad to Canaan, CT, pauses for a photo stop at West Cornwall, CT on 23-October-2005.

There are other photos of early in the run over on the Eastern Board...

What's going to become of the FL9s?

I'll quote the trip brochure, which by the way was a nice amenity:

"Several will be retained for use on work and leaf-cleaning trains and as spares, but as they suffer inevitable mechanical failures, they won't be repaired."

Are there any others out there that I could ride?

The Railroad Museum of New England just north of Waterbury, CT has a pair, and I think the Danbury museum does, too.

Don't forget the Maine Eastern is still using its two between Rockland and Brunswick, and only one weekend of operations remains this year!

Does anyone know what was the operating speed over the Housatonic RR?

I had my GPS with me, so I can say rather definitively that we never exceeded 30 mph. The railroad between Berkshire Junction and Canaan is about evenly divided between 10 mph running and 25 mph at present. Keep in mind that recent flooding has increased the amount of slow orders in place.
