Steam & Excursion > Some EBT infoDate: 10/27/05 17:45 Some EBT info Author: pennsy3750 The following is from an inside source, who has requested that he remain anonymous.
... The waivers under which #14 is operating expire at the end of October. There's nothing mechanically wrong with #14, she just needs the 15-year overhaul (like #15 received) to be FRA-compliant. The EBT will petition the FRA to allow them to use #14 as a backup, until (if) another locomotive is brought back to service. And a comment on what locomotive will be next: It could be a year (or more) before a decision is made on which locomotive will be brought back to service, if any. That decision is up to the Kovalchick family. When I hear anything more, I'll let you know. Date: 10/28/05 11:13 Re: Some EBT info Author: BillL Huh? The 15 is already out and in revenue service and 14 will be put to bed after one more days service on Saturday. The 15 will continue and run on Sunday and then be serviced for next year.
There's nothing unusual or secret here. Having 2 engines for a short time allowed Stanley Hall and the EBT to make a nice chuck of change running trips for Jim Gunning and Carl Franz for example. Railroad charters are a nice revenue source for any railroad, especially the EBT. Date: 10/28/05 15:40 Re: Some EBT info Author: trainrider47 Bill,
The EBT is going to petition for some sort of limited use extension for the #14. Yes, the #15 is back in service, but if it experiences mechanical difficulties, the EBT wants to be able to use the #14 as a back up. Of course, whether the FRA goes along is another matter entirely! Yes it is. Another interesting tidbit I learned from the same source was that the FRA received an anonymous complaint regarding the locomotives. Long story short, they made a surpise visit/inspection, and pronounced everything, including engines 14 and 15, to be safe for operation. Whether this will affect their decision on #14's backup status, I have no idea. |
