I heard a call for NYC steam
Author: choochoocharlie

I thought that I heard somene call for some New York Central steam. Well in answer to that call here are a couple more of my Father's shots of some NYC steam. First is of a 4-8-2 Mohawk #3142 at Pittsfield, Massachusetts in August of 1947.

Keep it up. Great stuff. Always wonderful to see God's Greatest Steam engines ( except for SP).

Charlie, I may have been the one who sent the call. Thanks for those. I was eight years old when the shot of the Mohawk was taken. If that's Hudson 5201, that would be the very first J-1b model. 5200 was the "prototype" and single J-1a ever built.

Can you hear a call for Rio Grande steam? hehehehehehehe, probably not. Oh well. Thanx for the New Haven and the NYC stuff, it's almost as interesting as the Rio Grande is.

Almost

Wish there were some Rio Grande steam shots in my Father's collection, but unfortunately not. I love steam no matter the road that it belonged to. But my Father's stuff only covers New England, New York and maybe Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Will know more as I go thru the 4X5 negs as well as some color slides. I am thankful that I have all of those too. I have been finding some really interesting shots in the collection. Am glad that you all find them interesting too. Photos from over 50 years ago are always interesting to look at.

Thanks much, and another vote for more NYC steam. This place is too western-centric as it is...............

That Mohawk's running on new unballasted track. Old ties are visible behind the speeder, a spike keg stands near the track, a couple spikes look to be on the ground. With the speeder still sitting there, perhaps the track crew is standing just to the side of the picture waiting for the train to get out of there so they can get back to work.

Great photo, thanks.

Nice picture! It also looks like there is a dock plate with a person loading/offloading baggage or freight in/out of the first car behind the tender.
