Nevada Northern No. 40 / pond reflection.....
Author: rcfarewell

All,

Here's another one from this last Feb. at the Nevada Northern, this one of No. 40 and train reflecting in a pond along Steptoe Creek. I wish that the water was a bit calmer, but you can't have everything.

Enjoy!!!

good shot, say did you use a polarizer filter on that shot?

No, no polarizer but.......

I shot it a half stop under using Provia 100F. It looks "better" but not as saturated if one takes P-shop and lightens it a bit, thence ups the contrast. I kind of liked it with the deep blue sky, though.

Hi Rich,

It was great traveling with you guys. Learned a lot!

Here's a shot of #93 at the same place. Not a perfect reflection either, but a great location anyway. No filters, no fooling!

Arghh, mine was indeed a bit too dark. I like Mike's better!!
It still was a great place to shoot, though!!!! I'll post another one from the north side of Steptoe Fill, from the late afternoon glint light, tonight. I can hardly wait to see what next year's capers bring!!!

Rich,

I just hope we have water again next year!

Also, maybe we can do better on the Keystone branch. The morning clouds didn't help and the afternoon run was too late for the tunnel exit shot. I guess that's what keeps us coming back for more!

Plus, I just can't get enough of that Adverse/high line glint!

But I have Photoshop, so I CAN have everything. . .

Wow, Michael,
that is a STUNNING photograph. Worth the cost of the trip right there! Who chartered the train? I think I'd much rather do this next year than another photo freight on the C&TS. . .

Q. for Dan: Hokey dokey, I give.....how'd you do that?
Author: rcfarewell

Dan,

How'd you do that??? That was soooooo cool to see that come out of the image!!!!! I've got P-shop Elements on my machine here, but have just begun to scratch the surface as to what it can do. Could you give me a hint as to what capabilities to snoop that you used to accomplish the water clean-up? Any help would be most appreciated!

1. copied the top of the photo. Reduced the constrast and brightness slightly, and added a very slight "ripple" effect in the filter section.
2. cut out where the water and reflection was on the whole photo
3. inverted and flipped the copy of the top of the photo
4. pasted it in underneath the full photo with the water and reflection cut out.

Why dont I think of these things...........
Author: rcfarewell

Dan,

Now that's a clever way to do it! I figured there was a P-shop filter or smoothing routine or some such that would take the ripples out of the water. I never thought to invert the original train and turn it into a refelction.........thanks much for helping to open my eyes to other possibilities, ie to "think" for a change!!

Again, thanks!!!

Dan,

It was run by the Nevada Northern as their Winter Photographer's Weekend(s). It was advertised in Railfan, so I was sort of surprised that we didn't have more people attend. Also, the Heber Valley RR ran two days, mid week, between the two Nevada Northern Weekends. I'd highly recommend doing both. You would be supporting two great railroads and getting some fantastic photos to boot, plus you'd meet a lot of fun people!

Watch for their ads next year, or email the railroad and get on their list.
