Smoke Consumers

I have noticed various mentions made to "smoke abatement canisters" or "smoke consumers"
in later model steamers. They seem to be small cylindrical protrusions from the sides of the firebox (at least that's what's visible from the outside).

Does anyone know just what these are, what they do to the smoke (or fire) and how they work?

Any input would be appreciated.
