Locomotives built in 1933
Author: scottp

If I remember correctly, the only steam engine built for U.S. use in 1933 was an experimental D&H engine. (Does that mean no small industrial engines either?)
How many other types, such as diesels, oil-electrics and electric locomotives? I suppose it wouldn't be many, due to the Depression.
My point is, if you tell someone "only one steam locomotive" they might think it was because that was an obsolete technology.

In 1933, not much of anything was being built. Don't have the graphs or statistics handy, but that was near the bottom of the Depression (and it took several years to pull out). In the electric railways it was just as bad, if not worse. The only two interurban cars built in the early and mid 30's were to replace cars destroyed by fire on the Napa Valley line in California in 1932. Not until the PCC car became available in 1936 did streetcar production revive. On the rubber-tired side, old car gatherings usually have plenty of Model "A" Fords and some '29 Chevy's but very few 1933 models of any brand.

IIRC, the only domestic steamer delivered by ALCO, Lima or Baldwin in '33 was a "sport model" ( non-Russian design ) light 2-10-0 for the Durham and Southern from Baldwin. I recall reading this in a TRAINS article by DPM many years ago. I think Lima may not have built anything in '32, either. The last big order Lima got before the bottom dropped out was for the 40 C&O 2-10-4's in 1930, and at least 2 C&IM 2-10-2's were built in '31. '34 saw some Pacifics for the B&M and some yard goats for the NKP.

But the railroads attempted to keep their shop forces busy including some home designed rebuilds?
