Sierra 3 in Steam at Jamestown
Author: TRS

On the evening of Thursday, July 1, 2010, staff at Railtown 1897 SHP fired-up Sierra 3, 4-6-0 (Rogers 4493 / 1891), originally Prescott & Arizona Central Railway 3. Very late in the day, the locomotive was coupled to Sierra Railway 7, a recently restored wood caboose.

The locomotive operated tender-first out to the run-around track near the quarry, approximately 3 miles southwest of Jamestown, California. At about 8:15 PM, just as the sun was setting, the train returned to Jamestown chimney-first.

Image 3: Sierra 3 + Sierra 7 at Bell Mooney Road, 8:00 PM. Seconds after this image was recorded, the sun set behind a distant ridge.

In addition to a handful of enthusiasts, Sacramento's KCRA Channel 3 also covered the event. A link to the KCRA coverage is available via the Railtown 1897 website.

Another similar outing is planned for today (July 2). Railtown 1897 SHP plan to operate Sierra 3 this weekend: Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4, 2010.

Well done gentleman! Wish I could ride the caboose this weekend behind the #3 with you this weekend.

Thanks for the images and great news.

Thanks for posting these. They really capture the Sierra Ry as she has been remembered by generations of Railfans.

Very nice. A pleasant change to see something good happen despite the state of our State.

John

Indeed it does. Time for a photo charter in 2011?

Well, it takes two to tango, but if she was to say yes, I'd put on my tuxedo and find a long-stemmed rose to tuck between my teeth.
