SOO Line 1003 Photo Charter
Author: 1003-2719-1385-engr

I am being the messenger here but also trying to help promote. An outting with SOO line 1003 has been planned for the fall of 2010 in south central Wisconsin. This is to be the first time we have been out in more then a year. We are looking to fill the remaining spots with interested people.

I can not provide any details, but can mention the website that has the information and you can register for the trip on. It is 2 days long.

It might be beneficial to all involved with photo charters if they could somehow coordinate dates with other operators. I don't know who planned what first but there are other charters running about the same time that no doubt are competing for a limited universe of participants. Perhaps some would like to do both but can't be in the two different places at the same time. I'm not trying to be critical. Just a suggestion but may not be pratical to work out.

I have had the privilege of participating in past photo charters with the #1003. She is a fun engine to watch
and listen too and her crew does it's best to please the crew. There are many scenic locations that can be
drawn from and perhaps they might be able to attract some of the vintage local cars and trucks as they have in
the past. In any case, it is a fun opportunity and that has been run very well with ample locations for the
still photographer AND the videographer. Don't know how much longer this engine can run before it has to have
some major work done so if I am right this might be another reason to see this "Old Beauty" do her magic. I
might add that the car museum where she is located is worth visiting prior to the start of the photo charter.

Thank you for your compliments on your past experiences with our photo charters. Saying this is one of the few more remaining times to see the 1003 is correct as our 15 year date comes up in early November of 2011.

The photo group has a majority of the spots filled just looking to finish adding a few more. Be glad to see you if anyone wants to participate.

I wish I could be there, but I have another charter that I'm attending that weekend. Hopefully there will be another one next year that I can attend.

The 1003 is a great performer. The crew know how to do runbys with good smoke, there should be fall colors and the WSOR has some excellent photo locations. With the 15 years running out soon, it's unlikely that this privately owned loco will receive the required 1472 day overhaul to run again. Come see it before it becomes just another static museum display.

Photo no. 1 is 1003 switching the elevator at Fairwater.
Photo no. 2 is 1003 leaving the elevator at Randolph with a flatcar load of Allis Chalmers tractors heading for Horicon.

Awesome pictures! The Fairwater Feed & Supply shot is really nice. What's the possibility that there will be another photo charter next year before her time runs out?

Most likely there will not be another and we are hoping to keep the one for 2010 happening.

As I understand it, the 1003 is mostly used for WSOR Christmas trains, and maybe one photo charter each year. Since the FRA 15 year boiler time runs out before Christmas of 2011, it is unlikely that the owners will go through the time and expense of the annual inspection in 2011, just to run one photo charter.

That means, come see it this year if you want to see it under steam.

Thanks for the info guys. Like I said earlier, I have already signed up for three charters that are running Sunday - Tuesday that same weekend, so I can't make this one. If it was any other weekend in October, I would be there in a heartbeat.

We have not signed off an annual yet, and when we do it will carry us through any operation next week as well..
