OHCR 6325 - August 13, 2004
Author: refarkas

OHCR 6325 powered the steam-powered segment of an Orrville Railroad Heritage Society excursion on August 13, 2004.
Photo #1 has OHCR 6325 waiting in the early-morning fog at Dennison, Ohio.
Photo #2 shows OHCR 6325 waiting for the ORHS special to arrive at Bowerstown, Ohio after the 6325 was towed backwards to the site by OHCR F-7's 1000 and 1001.

Here is my third photo of OHCR 6325 on August 13, 2004. OHCR 6325 is still waiting at Bowerstown, Ohio for the arrival of the ORHS diesel-powered excursion train which was to arrive on the Wheeling and Lake Erie.

Here is my final shot of OHCR 6325 on August 13, 2004. It is westbound crossing over Route 151 between Bowerstown and Dennison, Ohio.

Was that 2004? IIRC, 6325 didn't steam after suffering an overheated bearing on the last day of Train Festival 2004...

I believe 6325 ran one more time after August, on a Sept or October run to Columbus. The bearing overheated and I believe the engine limped into Columbus, or
was relieved with a diesel somewhere near Newark.

So this run from Bowerstown, was likely the next to last run of 6325.

I shot it and 1293 on a trip in June 2004, before Trainfestival. Dennison-Morgan Run with 6325, Morgan Run to Sugar Creek with 1293, 6325 then backed to Sugar Creek, and pulled the special to Morgan Run, where the F-Units took it the final leg to Dennison. There was also a car show going on in Sugar Creek, so a very variety-filled day!!!

We just released a new video a couple of weeks ago with one of the last photo specials with 6325. Its called "6325 Freight Special" October 2003.
It can be found on our web site.

I really like this engine and hope it can be repaired. The clock is running though on the boiler time, which started in 2001!!! 15 years is the limit.

Greg, Is this the same problem that the Frisco 1522 had?

Not sure what the defect with 1522 was exactly, but they also would have had to
make it compliant with the new FRA laws that were coming into play, so a lot of bucks
would have been needed, and we were entering the Amtrak age of trip excursions due to the high insurance.
I think FRISCO 1522 addressed this a month or so ago on this board.

As for 6325, I had heard it was a hot main axel bearing, but this has never been confirmed. The semi-official
word is that they do not know exactly what repairs need to be made since they have never fully inspected it. There
has never been the need to fix whatever problem needs to be fixed since the passenger excursions ended
during this time. I guess you can read into that any way you want to.

My take is that since they have the 1293 serviceable, and I assume the 33, their main focus is to get the roundhouse
done, and then proceed with the 763 which has been started apparently. My guess is that with the possibility of only 2-3
steam runs allowed by GW per year that there is not much likelihood that 6325 will run again before its boiler time expires. I
hope I am wrong, but thats my hunch. I would guess that 763 will steam long before 6325 unless someone leases it for some
reason and does the repairs needed. Not saying it will be leased, just throwing things out there.

I could see the Age of Steam Roundhouse being a place that steam operators send their engines to do full repairs perhaps some day.
Maybe Ross is waiting for them to get done with the RH before he moves 614 there!!! Again just thinking out loud here.

While the roundhouse will be first class, I would have traded it for regular operating steam on the old OC that we had several years ago.
Operating steam always beats static displays in my mind...Again just my opinion. I guess the roundhouse could only occur through the sale of
the Ohio Central. I look forward to seeing some steam there in operation in the future.
