moving of 614?
Author: ReadingT-1

Any information on C&O 614 moving, I know I heard the date 12/10 as a possible day, but I take it that won't happen? Just wondering if anyone had any news that would be of help.

614 is undergoing the final mechanical preparations for its move to Roanoke with no firm date yet for the move.

It should occur sometime around the 15th. of December.

Good to see 614 out from under the tarp Mr. Rowland, and if I think I know you, you are glad she is seeing the light of day again, alibet "cold", but in the sunshine never the less...Beutiful piece of machinery.

Yah, I Still watch my 1980's VHS tape of the 614 and Ross giving them coal drags hell during the ACE 3000 tests! God that's GOOD steam footage! I just love the whistle on that engine! Even got a "crummy" on the rear end too! Thanx Ross, for all you've done and continue to do in the world of steam railroading.

Explain to me again why the 614 is going to Roanoke?
Its going to be dead, going there right? So why the interest in a dead engine move?

Greg, I've never seen the 614 so am looking forward to the to-be-announced event at the VMT. If the stars align during the move and I can see it, I'd love to see it's drivers moving even with the locomotive cold.

As of today the final mechanical preparations are nearly finshed. She will be getting her final NS inspection sometime this coming week and if that goes well, as expected, then the move will occur soon thereafter.

She's going to Roanoke to join with the N&W 611 in a " Celebration of Thorobreds" centered around the 611's 60th. birthday. Details will be announced on the VMT website soon. 614 is America's last commercially produced mainline pssgr. steam engine and 611 is America's last built pssgr. steam engine, so you might say they're America's Final 2!!, or if you prefer the " Last and Best"!!.

Hey Ross you might consider numbering the 614 to 611, since she had this number back near the end of steam. Then we would have two 611's in one place to
confuse the issue further.
I acquired a reel of film which showed a diesel excursion on the C&O from Cincinnati to I believe Huntington. On the return there is a brief snippet of two locos off in the distance
at the Russell yard. You can tell one is a 4-8-4 numbered 611!!! I believe my brother has stills of these engines circa 1960-64 time frame.
With snow here this morning in Southern Ohio I can't help but remember seeing N&W steam in the snow as a kid. This time of year we would get 2 passenger trains in the morning eastbound(Arrow and Cavalier), then in the afternoon there would usually be at least one or two Christmas extra mail trains with J's or K2a's.
I cant believe its been over 25 years since the 614 ran the coal trains in WV. N&W 611 and I share the same birth year. I just hope I don't get cold like 611 is today!!! :)
