This has been a long time coming with lots of work by many folks. We have even more work ahead, but it was great to get this milestone behind us.

Gordon's generous donation was certainly a huge catalyst to this project from day one. I am glad you recorded the event for us Chris.

Looks great and it's great to see the city coming together to push a museum like this forward. When it's finished, I'm definitely taking a week's vacation to Oregon!

Hearty congratulations to Doyle and the many, many others whose hard work and dedication made this possible. Great to know that these machines will have an appropriate home for long into the future.

Anybody but me notice that this steam event seems to attract mostly people over 60? What about future generations of steam people?

The under 60 crowd was probably at work (this was on a weekday) or at home with their kid (as I was)- You see a much more varied crowds age wise at the Holiday Express trains pulled behind Portland steam.

It's been a long road for this project, but thanks to the generous contributions, hard work, and vision of so many individuals and groups, a milestone has been reached! I'm looking forward to seeing progress and completion of this important facility.

Perhaps the future generations of steam people are tired of curmudgeonly posts on the internet telling them they shouldn't hang flags on steam locomotives.

But seriously, major congrats to ORHF, and best wishes for them in the future. Looking forward to visiting this beautiful facility some day!

A great, great day for Pacific Northwest railroad preservation! My heartiest salute to Doyle and the many others who worked so long for this--all generations will appreciate and applaud this accomplishment. Bravo! Kurt.

I had the good fortune of escorting Gordon Zimmerman during the two trips on #4449 ran from Portland to Wisharm over the July 4th weekend. This philanthropist has a long history of donating to railroad causes over 5 decades including groups in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Portland. He is slowing down a little and is using a walker for stability but he still is sharp as a tack and has many stories to tell. I feel lucky to have heard many of those as a car host for two day behind the $4449. It is no mystery that the baggage car behind the #449's tender is named in his honor! Mr. Zimmerman has always put his money where his mouth is to the delight of many. The New building is a testament to his desire to see a safe and secure home for the three engines from Oak Park. ---Mike Pechner

GREAT posting Chris. As I told the PNWC-NRHS members attending our meeting that evening, this day is a VERY big deal
in Portland history and railroad preservation in general. It has been 50+ years since the city of Portland solicited
these locomotive donations.......they will now finaly have a permanent home.

this ground breaking event was primarily for the All Aboard steering committee members who have guided and pushed
the ORHF fund raising effort. and yes, most of these movers and shakers are old.......well me also;
they know where the $$$ are. rest assured that
the displays that we will be developing with OMSI will have kids as a major focus as does our Holiday Express
event.

More than 260 folk attended this event......and yes, I would also vote Gordon to Saint Hood..............

It is interesting to think of where these locomotives would be without all those 60+ folks at the groundbreaking, as a lot of them were young when this journey began...if my math is correct Mr. McCormack was 32 when I met him at Fort Lewis with the Freedom Train ( I was 13)and judging by the photos from the Michigan trip, there's a bunch of young guys with more than a passing interest in the future well-being of the ORHF...Congratulations to all for the hard work and dedication that has gone into this long and difficult process.

This is indeed a big step forward in a process that started either in 1958 (donation of the three locomotives to the City of Portland), or 1975 (Doyle leads restoration of the 4449), or 1998 (Roundhouse Task Force, predecessor of ORHF, formed by Laurel Lyon, Doyle McCormack, Dave Brown, Ed Immel, Don Wheeler, Don Stevens and others)

Congratulations! and a reminder to everyone that this is just the beginning of another long process.
