Great photos. When I asked an engineer I worked with about the 9000's, he said on our district (Cheyenne-North Platte) they were the best. You could climb the east side of Archer hill and be down to like 3 mph with 125 empty reefers and never slip or stall.

Bob, you're correct. Alco, in the period during which they were actively marketing 3-cylinder power, made much hay about the "more even turning moment" as I recall the term. Three crank pins located 120 degrees apart rather than two at 90 degrees. More even distribution of power impulses.

I was gonna ask, but did some research instead into their speed range and see that Alco rated them at 50mph...that seems like it must've been a boatload of reciprocating weight at those RPM's, eh? Would have been fun to watch...
