844 + 18 = 2?

2 Steam locomotives that is...

1. 844 steams across the Great Plains just East of Trinidad Colorado.

2. 844 Steams into Walsenburg.

3. 18 Steams out of La Veta towards Walsenburg and the 844. (Note: there's a bit of photoshop here to get my Mini Clubman out of the photo).

Glad we got down to where the crossing where that last picture was taken. It was a good shot.

Great shots.

On photo #2 it looks like you got a rare catch of 844 "relieving herself". Usually all you get is the blowdown separator burping and making a mess out of the top of the boiler jacket. On the 4449 they just let 'er rip through the unique SP blowdown spreader.
Note to all the steam "experts" out there. I know they blow the 844 down frequently, it just never seems to be in front of a crowd or a camera. After all, she tries her best to be a lady, don'tcha know?

Not that rare of a shot right now since the turret has been replumbed down under the cab for the time being.

That's a "relief" :-) When the 844 came through California on the 150th Anniversary tour the separator kept "burbling" and and spitting crud all over the top of the boiler jacket. "Hot Water" explained to me that the fireman (usually) had to get a good look at what was coming out of the blowdown to see how much "mud" was in the boiler water and how much the boiler needed to be blown down. Makes sense 'cause I do know that too much crud in the boiler water = foaming and that is no good for the engine.
