How Logging Mallets Were Shipped In 1955 - Sierra #38!

The date is September 6, 1955 and the place is Oakdale, CA. The Sierra Railroad freight from Jamestown has just arrived and delivered to the SP 2-6-6-2 #38 for shipment to her new owner Rayonier Inc. at Hoquium, WA.

Rayonier paid $16,000 for #38 some 3 years after the Sierra RR bought the engine from her original owner Weyerhaeuser Timber. The price to Rayonier was FOB the SP tracks at Oakdale, CA.

The original sale price for #38 in 1934 when she was built was $53,250.00. Clearly by 1955 the market for used logging Mallets was drying up!

Rayonier sent a courier (Mr. Nels Hill) to ride the engine on her trip north. His job was to watch for hot journals and take care of the engine in route.

Notice that the SP merely cut her into the freight train as if she was just another boxcar!

So, how was the engine sitter supposed to alert the engineer that there WAS a problem? A flag? Or did he have a radio? Yoy do have a magnificent collection.

Martin, are any of Rayonier's steamers still hidden away around Aberdeen or up in the woods there?

None of Rayonier's lokies are "hidden". Most were sold or donated at the end of operations. Several are on display while a couple of them operate today. We have Rayonier Willamette #2 and 2-8-2 #70 in service at Mt Rainier Scenic RR at Mineral, WA.

Just curious.......what happened to the five Baldwin AS616 diesels when the logging line folded?

All of the Crane Creek Camp Baldwin Diesels were scrapped.

The #14 - To SMJ, NJ because it was the only one with r/b. The last I heard iy was still there!

You know I can't remember, but the whole railroad was still intact at that time, so there is no reason why they couldn't have barged it down to Hoquiam.
