3985 from the vault
Author: Bob3985

For those of you who have not seen the 3985 at rest before its restoration here is my photo of it in the employees parking lot at the Cheyenne UP depot in 1978. You will notice Amtrak #5 sitting on mainline 1 in the background. Whenever Amtrak came to town while we were going over the Challenger, some of the folks onboard would wander over to see what we were doing and it was Lynn Nystrom's job to explain to them that the railroad was short on power and we were told to get 3985 back in service.

The second photo is of yours truly in my rolling office to show you the engineer's side of the cab with this Tom Kelcek photo of me going after the throttle to get 'er up to speed.

Thanks to all of you over the years, both railfans and company employees, for your kind support and friendship.

Bob,

I like that shot of you in the cab...classic shot...takes 3 men and a little boy to open the throttle on 3985?

That's some huge fence they had around it. Glad that chain link prison came down.

Where's 'the diesel MU control' box?
Wes.

Wes,

The "MU Box" generally wasn't installed unless they needed a diesel behind the locomotive. Since the UP had only one "MU Box", it could be moved from 844 to 3985 as needed.

Oh, Good!

So then they can add it to the rebuilt 4000, Right?

In case it needs the power?

Wes.

The diesel MU box would have been right next to the Rear End monitor but as you can see this was a Dieselless trip. Imagine that?

Great!!

I can see it all NOW!

A Commemorative UP Sesquicentennial Triple header (19 cars...?) of 844, 3985 and 40xx all steaming along ---- with three slaved SD90MACs for "insurance".

Folks STILL never believe that we built this entire country and fought 2 Great Wars --- all without Dismals.
Curse you,'HotWater!

Wes...

If they used 90MAC's I think the Steamers would be the insurance.

Bob -- that's a great photo of you in your
former office. I didn't realize the 3985's
throttle was that hard to pull. I KNOW you
are up to it! Long live the 3985 -- and the 844!
