Steam & Excursion > Rare view of Railtown roundhouseDate: 02/03/13 10:29 Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: msharps Yesterday was a work/play day at Railtown 1897 which afforded a rare view of the roundhouse complex with all of the locomotives backed out of the stalls. Pictured here are steam locomotives #3, #28, #34, #2; Caboose #7, and Hetch Hetchy railcar #19 on the turntable. February 2, 2013.
1) Roundhouse complex 2) Locomotives 3) Empty roundhouse Date: 02/03/13 10:30 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: msharps Date: 02/03/13 10:40 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: LoggerHogger Good shots. Where did they move Pickering Lumber Shay #7?
Martin Date: 02/03/13 10:44 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: speeder3 Those are great pics! Not very often you get to view the entire inside of the roundhouse in one shot. Very, very cool. I really miss that place!

All that hard work for nothing... Brian Date: 02/03/13 12:20 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: Consol Agree with Brian. Somebody help the old lady!
She deserves better! Date: 02/03/13 14:15 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: LoggerHogger Thanks for the wider shot showing PLC #7 on the deadline. This was the same spot that Sierra Ry #3 waited for her first restoration that occurred in 1948. Let's hope that this track gives PLC #7 the same "luck" and she will be restored again.

It was probably around the time I rode it as a kid. Have stopped by a few times since, but need to get back there again. It and the Nevada Northern have the best "railroad" feel to them of the places I've been.

Here's a pullback view showing the lift used to get the first shot. Date: 02/04/13 17:29 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: shavano Does anybody know what the story is on the boxcar/campcar in the last picture? It looks like a good stiff breeze, if it didn't just blow through it, would blow it over. What can they do with a car in that state?
Date: 02/05/13 07:47 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: speeder3 Just a guess, but I think that particular car was built for movie service using an ex-Pickering Lumber flat car. It looks like there are stake pockets along the side frame.
Brian Date: 10/10/13 20:50 Re: Rare view of Railtown roundhouse Author: Railtown1897SHP Brian is correct-- that car was augmented for movie service. We attempt to preserve it in that condition, but are challenged by the local kids and the ephemeral construction methods intended for short-term movie service.
