2013 steam excursions: you snooze, you lose
Author: RuleG

As of now, the 261 excursion from Minneapolis to Duluth is nearly all sold out except for a few first class tickets.

The March 9, 10, 16 and 23rd trips with 630 are sold out.

The May 12 765 Nickel Plate Limited excursion is completely sold out.

There are few seats left on on the May 25 and May 26 765 Horseshoe Curve trips.

Although procrastinators (yes, I'm guilty this time) miss out, I'm happy for the trip organizers and hope that all the trips go smoothly.

When any Fall trips are announced, I'll decide more quickly.

I'm really glad to see this happening. I'll be stuck at work for most of this stuff, but I'm glad to see these owner/operators doing well in sales!

Sold-out excursions are a GOOD thing! Maybe we'll do what we did last year--go up to watch and hit the 765.org gift shop instead of riding.

Tickets are still available for Pete's New Hope and Ivyland #40 as L&C
on May 16th. Not sure if any tickets still remain for BR&W on the 15th,
they were going fast.

First charter at New Hope since the rebuild. How long has it been? I think
I last photographed #40 on a charter with a Canon 20D.

Railroad excursions are a very lucrative business anymore. Buying a train ticket is about as expensive as buying a plane ticket.

Except it costs more to operate a steam locomotive per mile than a 737.

I truly wish I could be with you who are riding these trips; but my wife has health issues and I am her caretaker. That's why I wish there were some trips operated down here in Maryland.

The grosses may be significant, but so are the expenses.

ROTFL!!

If you truly believe this, I have a sure fire way for you to make a small fortune running steam excursions.

Start with a big one...

Mr. Melvin is dead on target. For a small fee I'll send you copies of my check books over the years that show the 7 figure amounts I've written to pay the stable bills for these glorious machines!!

The steam excursions are doing really well if the ticket revenues cover the direct operating costs ( track fee, insurance premium(s),equipment rentals, fuel&water, sales/advertising,misc.) and there's a tiny bit left over to put in the kitty for long term maintenance and the inevitable 1472 day rebuild.

The next organization that figures out a program wherein the steam locomotive will fully earn all of its direct operating costs AND fund its long term costs will be the first one. If you enjoy being alive do not hold your breath waiting for this to happen!!

Bottom line is they're as expensive as they are thrilling. There is no free love, just ask a married man!!
