Status of UP 3985 and 844
Author: Tomas

Last weekend Union pacific had their annual open house including the steam shop and old roundhouse. The UP 844 crew was hard at work getting the 844 ready for her trip next month. The smoke box of the 844 is seldom seen by the public.

The E units in the old roundhouse made for some great photographs.

Cylinder jackets on 844 off so they can add some more bling?

The 3985 is down for the mandatory 15 year FRA inspection and will be getting a complete overhaul. The steam crew has devoted all their time and effort to getting the 844 ready and the 3985 has been put on the back burner. It will likely be at least 2 years or more before the 3985 is ready. With the 838 and the 3985 parked next to each other it looked like a scene right out of the 1950's in the old roundhouse.

In case you are wondering what kind of work the 3985 needs or has done here is the lists.

Neat shot of 838 and 3985 ... Is ex-DRGW F9B 5763 still outside the roundhouse?

Thanks,

I might be wrong but I believe that D&RGW B unit has been gone for some time now. I don't remember seeing it the last few years I have been there. Maybe someone else has some information.

Ah-HA! The steam crew's dirty little secret has been revealed!

All of those big drivers, churning rods, steam, and smoke are just for show.

The real movement is powered by that propeller in the front!

(Sorry...this is Sarcastics Awareness Month, after all!)

Wait until you see the new cylinder jackets and head covers.

Having seen the cab cards, 3985 isn't due for it's 15 year until 2014.

Interesting. I thought something was a bit fishy with all the rhetoric coming out of the Steam Shop concerning 3985. Especially since she has essentially been "stripped" since the winter of 2-10/2011. Too bad.

I wonder if the 4014 would fit in there?

That list is for the 3985 only?

If so, it at least has had a considerable amount of work done to it. (But quite a bit to go).
Yes I know most of it is minor, but you've gotta start somewhere!
Great to see that stuff!

When I started railfanning, I had no idea what a staybolt was or what it did, being mostly into trolley car operation. But over the years I've found out how important they are and have marveled at how many of the durn things it takes to keep a steam locomotive in fine fettle. If there's one item that both 844 and 3985 have plenty of, it's staybolts!

It won't fit in the old roundhouse with the tender but there is plenty of room in the steam shop. The 6936 Centennial was in there with room to spare. A few more pics of the old roundhouse.

The old E units gave a nice touch to the old roundhouse.

The seven stalls that still exist were part of the passenger house. The stalls were not long enough for 3900's or 4000's. One stall has been lengthened enough for the 3985.
The shot of the 3985 and 838 might look like old time if they weren't backed into he stalls. Any photos you see with the noses showing thru the doors was staged.
