IAIS 7081 Atlantic - Anita, IA
Author: mopac1978

Here's a few shots from the first trip today from Atlantic to Anita and back, and one from the second trip, right before the rains came.

1) Leaving Atlantic.

2) Wiota. The depot is owned by an ag business, and was moved across the tracks from where it originally sat.

3) Nearing Anita.

4) Stopped in Anita. Surprisingly there weren't hordes of people seeing how close they could stand next to it...

5) Anita.

6) Crowds on the other side.

Is she a stokered engine or still a Chinese "hand bailer"?

She's stokered.

What is the second headlight for and why is it never on?

Nice shots and posted so quickly - thanks!

Quick note - the images do have a slight yellowish /green
cast to them. I went into Photoshop and clicked on "Auto
color" and viola.

I find the American flags a bit interesting - not sure I
get it but I don't mind it either. It is really cool to
be able to see Chinese steam in America as Chinese steam
but the US flags seem to be a contradiction.

Very nice photos although I'm not a fan of Chinese steam as a whole. I'd much rather this be an American locomotive, I don't like the red wheels either. Just my opinion. Thanks for posting.

Nice shots. Lots of smoke. Maybe the clouds kept a lot of people away.

Hello TO members, this came to mind after my first post on this thread, so here goes:

First, I am quite new to rail fanning and I have spent my whole working career in aviation. I am retired and now have the time to pursue this new hobby. When the steam locomotive is being puled backwards by the diesel locomotive, how much of a load does all the connecting drive apparatus present. Is the steam locomotive helping at all ?

Thanks, John

When being hauled backward, the steam engine is mostly just "along for the ride".

The cars are ex-CN from the Montreal Deaux Montagnes commuter service.

Re: Load of connecting drive gear:

John, The extra resistance of the drive and connecting rods is minimal. Certainly the weight of the locomotive, tender, water car, tool may add to the load. If need be the steam engine could be used as a pusher, even in the backward configuration. Steam engines generally run just as well either direction, with some allowances for tracking on certain locomotives.

The other headlight was a halogen light. The top light used to be a xenon light, which cast an eerie, greenish light. IAIS replaced it with another halogen light, or at least a warmer colored light in 2010. I can't answer why the change in headlights, but I assume the crew has switches for both in the cab and runs it to their preference. The couple shots below demonstrate that both work; 1) with the old greenish xenon, and 2) with the replaced top headlight and the bottom lit also.

By the way, looks like you caught me in the third shot above, that is my Jeep in the pace line...

Kinda like high beam and low beam I guess. Maybe the Chinese don't know how to wire in a dimmer switch.
