Author: upheritage6

My main question is, did 4449 stop in Denver? Or was the train behind diesels?

Have you checked out the latest issue of Trains Magazine with a complete map of the AFT travels & displays?

Actually have not. Didn't know they did the AFT. I'll have to check it out.

I hope they proofread the Denver section better than they did the east coast.  The TRAINS map is flat out wrong as to how the AFT got from Albany into Vermont.  (It went over the B&M from Mechanicville, then up the Conn River, not via Whitehall as shown).

I think BoilingMan wrote the article but I'm not sure if he had a hand in the map

The train did not display in Denver. It displayed in Colorado Springs with BN 1776 and BN 1876.

The '49 passed through Denver on it's way East to meet the AFT in Chicago.  The AFT itself never displayed in Denver.
As to the AFT Map of the Month in this month's TRAINS:  Bill Metzger drew the map.  In researching it he called Ross Rowland and Ross gave him my number.  I joined the AFT in Jan '76 and kept a very accurate record of where we went.  I shared my records with Bill, and immediately overwhelmed him.  (the map was originally intended to run in July- my imput kind of blew THAT!)  I have a few records from 1975, but Bill waved me off on them and said he had 1975 covered.

Minor correction for Fort Wayne:  inbound the AFT displayed at Archbold, Ohio on the NYC Water Level Route.  After that, it went west through Kendallville and kept on going to Elkhart and turned on the loop track.  Then eastbound to Kendallville and then turned south on the former PRR (former GR&I) then south into the Fort Wayne Interstate Industrial Park.  By doing the Elkhart loop, the train was pointed correctly for display.  After 3 days at Fort Wayne it left northeast on the Wabash mainline.  The PRR to Kendallville is long gone now.

The problem is that there is no archive of AFT records, and AFTers for the most part were NOT railfans- so no one remembers the exact route. Once Ed Immel took over the logistical planning (around Spokane, I think) he made great maps and itineraries. By the time I came along all the moves were easy to record thanks to Ed and the folks in Baileys Crossroads.

Cut Bill some slack on the '75 portion of his map- he had no single source of info.
It's really a great map!
