FWRHS reaches agreement to remove, restore NKP 624
Author: nathansixchime

We've reached an agreement with the City of Hammond to facilitate the removal and restoration of Nickel Plate Road locomotive no. 624. The effort is being sponsored by a private donor from the Northeast Indiana region.

Kelly,

am I correct in assuming that this is a cosemetic restoration with a possibility of an operational restoration in the future?

Hardly an assumption at all, actually..."No. 624 will receive a full cosmetic restoration and may be considered a candidate for restoration to operation pending a more thorough inspection."

It's going to be quite a task to disassemble her and ship her via truck to Fort Wayne. I wish you guys the best of luck from far away. Can't wait to meet the new member of the family.

Keep up the good work Kelly. You guys are doing a great job preserving all things NKP. Anything new regarding Headwaters Junction? Thanks for your efforts and reply.

I recall hearing /reading about a project to restore a smaller NIckel Plate locomotive (smaller than NKP #765) some time
ago - maybe 5 years or so?  Was this the locomotive?

It was some time ago - a "smaller" NKP locomotive was going to be restored by some group - if not this one, which other
NKP locomotive might it have been?  And, no, I'm not talking about NKP #587 in Noblesville, IN.  Any news there?

/Mitch

Mark,

Yes - here's a minor update in an editorial the news carried in December: http://fortwaynerailroad.org/2016/12/an-on-track-tradition/

We've set up a separate non-profit entity, filed for the status with the IRS, and have a board of directors populated with community leaders, FWRHS members and business people.

This is comparable to the creation of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, which is the umbrella organization that manages the enginehouse in Portland and hosts the various groups involved.

One of the businesses that has already donated to the studies and development has said once the IRS status is granted, they'll be investing further into the project. As they also happen to be a major NS customer and vendor, they'll also help negotiate for the necessary property and ROW acquistion this year.

All an uphill climb, but it took our friends in Portland a decade to get to where they are now. Not a bad goal to try and emulate.
