Day 1: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4247326 Day 2: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4248090 Day 3: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4249054 Day 4 dawned gloomy and wet. Europe had experienced a warm and wet winter so expected snow in the Harz region was not to be. The IGE guests had chartered two Malley locos on the Harzgerode system to doublehead their charter train from Wernigerode to Nordhausen. Meanwhile their mainline train made a roundabout trip to reach Nordhausen for an afternoon run to Kassel. 1. On the Harz, a side by side departure was arranged leaving Drei Annen Hohne. On the left is the regular steam service to Brocken. On the right is the IGE charter to Nordhausen. There had to have been 200 photographers here for this departure including passengers off the charter train. 2. Near Elend the charter special works an uphill climb through the forest. 3. A photo halt and false departure was made at Sorge. cp1400 Date: 03/15/17 10:45 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 4 Harz Mountains Author: cp1400 4. Departing Benneckenstein and rolling through the countryside. This special had just met the regular steam train that runs from Nordhausen to Drei Annen Hohne and up the Brocken daily.
5 & 6. Better weather greeted everyone at the Nordhausen. On sheds the two Malleys were receiving attention prior to their return to Wernigerode. cp1400 Date: 03/15/17 10:48 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 4 Harz Mountains Author: cp1400 7. At Nordhausen the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (Harz Narrow Gauge) maintains an impressive station.
8. Meanwhile 41-096 was readying for the mainline departure from Nordhausen. 9. IGE passengers were back on the standard gauge train which departed Walkenreid in fine style destined for Kassel to end day 4. Day 5 tomorrow as the IGE special goes into the mountains west of Kassel. cp1400 Date: 03/15/17 11:17 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 4 Harz Mountains Author: Bob3985 Awesome photo coverage of quite a trip, thanks.
