Day 5 of the IGE winter tour around eastern Germany saw an early departure from Kassel with a route through the Hessian Mountain region. The tour on this day consisted of a large circle that included west from Kassel passing the ski slopes at Willingen then south direction to Frankenburg and Gießen (pronounced Giessen) before turning east for an overnight in Fulda.
 
1. First picture of the day sees 41-096 working uphill through the station at Warburg.
2. Later in the morning we see 41-096 working hard along the Hoppecke River near Brilon.
3. Departing Willingen after a brief stop, with skiers enjoying the slopes in the background.

4. South of Korbach the line twists and turns through several picturesque villages along the Itter River including this village of Thalitter.
5. Approaching a station stop at Münchausen.
6. Nearing a mainline connection at Cölbe.

7. After a side trip from Gißen to Wetzlar the train returned to Gießen where historic diesel 216-224 lead the train through Hungen on the route to Fulda for the night. V160 Class 216-224 was built in 1968.


I hope you enjoy today’s look at steam on the mainline in Germany. One more day to come as day 6 takes the train through Eisenach and Meinegen on the final leg to Nuremburg. Day 6 has some great shots so don’t miss it.

While I hate to use the word "cute," the 3-axle combine qualifies. Thanks for the coverage.

Do I see a tool car behind the tender, and an auxiliary tank behind the tool car?

Is 41-096 a 2-8-2 or 2-8-0?

The 41 class were passenger 2-8-2 locomotives with fairly large drive wheels, not as large as the Pacific class however.

IF only these specials could be annoumced far enough in advace, in order to make plans, time off work, air line reservations etc.
 

Thanks for sharing more. I noted the skiers right away. I remember being in the Munich trainshed as a ten-year-old about 1967 and recalled the many skiers getting on and off trains carrying their skies. I also recalled our train being pulled by a chunky steam loco with red drivers somewhere along the journey before we arrived in Munich, I believe.
