Starting on the Grade: 734 Puts on a Show
Author: Appalachianrails

4/2/2016

On a "Farewell to 734" photo charter sponsored by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the 734 puts on a great show of sight and sound for a photo runby as it starts moving on the middle of the grade from a complete stop. This was somewhere between the Narrows and Brush Tunnel.

Enjoy and thanks for watching.

Very nice video. Why is there some guy hanging off the side/rear of the caboose?

The guy on the cabloose?    I assume he is a conductor or brakeman to tell the engineer he is clear of the photoline.  But he wouldn't really have to lean out to to that, just look out the back railing.

Well, if that was indeed a staged run-by, with paying "photo charter" participants, then SOMEONE should have told that guy to stand on the rear platform of the caboose, like a REAL RAILROADER! Such a "pose" would then have made a nice going away photo, in my opinion.

Why would the engineer open the cylinder cocks briefly like he did?   Expecting a slip?  Just for the photogs?

Great video. I'm not a big fan of 2-8-0's in general, but I have seen a number of clips of 734 that make me reconsider.

Are you not aware that 734 has "run out of time" on her FRA mandated 15 year boiler certification? Unless you are very young, you probably will NOT see 734 in operation for quite some years, especially since all efforts are currently being focused on 2-6-6-2 compound C&O 1309.
