Day 1: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4247326 Day 2: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4248090 Day 3: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4249054 Day 4: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4249672 Day 5: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4250352 Today was the last of six days for the IGE tour in Eastern Germany. The train started in Fulda and made a clockwise loop north to Bad Hersfeld, then over the Hönebacher Grade to Eisenach. A second 41 class engine was added at Eisenach to lead the train up through the Förtha Tunnel and on to Meiningen and an eventual return to where the trip started in Nuremburg. 1. Our first view in the morning sees 41-1144 almost at the top of a tough climb and entering the Hönebacher Tunnel which was near the former border between West and East Germany. 2. Up the Förtha Grade out of Eisenach. On the hill above is the Wartburg Castle. Dating back to the first stones laid about 1067 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among its notable habitants was Martin Luther who was sheltered here in the 1500’s from Pope Leo X. During Luther’s time here he translated the New Testament of the Bible from Latin to German. Thanks to Wikipedia for information about Wartburg Castle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartburg 3. Leaving Bad Salzungen. Typical architecture of many German villages. cp1400 Date: 03/17/17 10:27 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 6 Wartburg Castle Author: cp1400 4. A classic scene leaving Immelborn. Old time signals and no wires.
5 & 6. Two views just south of Wernshausen. Two of my favourites from the trip. From here we bid the train adieu and started the long drive to Dunkirk and a ferry ride across the English Channel to the UK. I hope you all enjoyed this look at a fantastic six days of steam that still happens regularly in parts of Europe. cp1400 Date: 03/17/17 11:16 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 6 Wartburg Castle Author: refarkas Thanks for posting all these present-day treasures.
