Steam & Excursion > 844 with Lynn Nystrom, May 2009 in Ogden

Though I would share this photo and video aof the Union Pacific 844 with Lynn Nystrom getting ready to leave Ogden westbound, the morning of May 14, 2009.  Lynn was always kind to my family and I, and remembered us every time we saw him when the 844/3985 came to town, or during the Hostler model train show in Ogden which he would attend.  He left us too early, but left fond memories.  Hope you enjoy this tribute to Lynn.

Hats off to Mr. Nystrom R.I.P.

Nasty was a great guy with a marvelously wicked sense of humor. I always enjoyed being around him. 

They broke the mold when they made Nasty.  He was a genuine all around good guy and a blast to work with and be around.
I really miss the old crew.  They were the best.

I too miss my best old friend dearly. Don was correct in that Lynn was gruff on the outside but had a heart of gold. I remember when I convinced him to come out and work for the UP. He was a Special Agent in Chicago for the Rock where I once worked and met him then. He came out and did the interview and took the physical. That was when he learned he had hig blood pressure and could not be hired until it was under control. He took that really hard as he had quit his job to come out. So he went home, went to work for the town he lived in and got his blood pressure down.

He came out and took the physycal and got hired. After his training and student trips he got some time to move Mary out after she sold their home back in Mokena. They and her mom stayed at my house until they got their home bought. We remained close friends all our lives together. I was there at Mary's side next to his lifeless body in the hospital. I still see Mary Sunday mornings at our groups breakfast. I still have a photo of us together on my smart phone

We were a part of the 3985 restoration committee under the leadership of John Boehner and Don Ringstadt and that was where we got our start in steam. It led to us finishing our careers in the steam program at the end.

He may be gone but left an indellible impression on all he met throughout his life. I can only hope I do the same.  One day we will be together again recounting all the journeys we took together both on the rails and off. RIP my dear friend. Your memory lives in all our hearts.

Only met him, Mary, Bob, and Steve once when 3985 was in La but yeah even though it was once, it was like I've known them forever (even though I hesitated taking a picture) and I still respect the old crew, the new crew with Dickens, I'm boycotting until Ed's gone!

Thanks for that. Lynn and I were pretty close friends ever since 1981, and I fired for him many, many times, including a VERY fast trip from Rock Springs eastbound to Cheyenne, after the 4449/844 double header trip in 2007. One of the best times I had with Lynn was southbound out of Fife Yard, Tacoma on that returning to Portland 4449/844 doubleheader trip. I fired for Lynn out of Fife Yard, southbound with 844 as second engine. At the halfway "service stop" point, Doyle had invited Lynn forward to run 4449, so naturally I fired for him. It so great to see Doyle giving Lynn pointers on running 4449!  As a result, Lynn and I were EXTREMELY proud to say the we had run & fired BOTH UP 844 and SP 4449 on the same train, on the same day!

I sure miss him, even our long phone conversations when not on the road together!

Jack, I did not know that took place, and all I can say is good for you and Doyle.  I'll bet Lynn really enjoyed that.  It was a great trip and will be in my memory for as long as my memory will last.

Yes,I agree with all posts,In 1992,Lynn was kind enough to mail a photo of me,standing with a sign board I made for the crew,that said "Thank Yooo!.Uncle Pete and Crew!" He took in Elko, Nevada
